Avocados: Benefits, Why Choose Organic and Fresh, and Recipe Ideas

The avocado is a fruit like no other. Creamy, smooth, and rich in healthy fats, it has earned its place in our kitchens far beyond Mexico, its birthplace. But behind its popularity lie nutritional and agricultural realities worth knowing, so you can make the right choices.

A Concentrate of Essential Nutrients

The avocado is often called a "superfood", and rightly so. Half a medium avocado provides around 161 calories, 15 grams of fat — mainly oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat beneficial for the heart — as well as significant amounts of fibre, potassium, folate, vitamins K and E, and magnesium. It also contains carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, essential for eye and brain health.

Health Benefits

Cardiovascular health. A large study conducted over thirty years with more than 111,000 participants found that those who consumed the equivalent of one avocado per week had a 16% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 21% lower risk of coronary heart disease, compared with those who never ate them. This effect is particularly pronounced when avocado replaces saturated fats such as butter, margarine, or processed meats.

Blood sugar and satiety. Thanks to its fibre and monounsaturated fat content, avocado slows digestion and contributes to more stable blood sugar. Its fibre also promotes satiety, which can help limit snacking.

Gut microbiome. A clinical trial showed that daily avocado consumption, as part of a calorie-restricted diet, increased the abundance of bacteria involved in the fermentation of plant polysaccharides, an indicator of better digestive health.

Sleep. A recent study by the American Heart Association unexpectedly observed an improvement in sleep quality among participants who consumed one avocado per day, possibly linked to the combination of monounsaturated fatty acids, fibre, potassium, vitamin K, folic acid, and copper.

A note of caution. Avocado remains a calorie-dense food. A medium avocado provides around 240 calories. It is therefore recommended to eat it in place of other fats, not in addition to them, to avoid an energy surplus.

Why Choose Organic and Fresh?

The organic choice. Organic farming prohibits synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers, which reduces exposure to residues and protects soil and biodiversity. Studies conducted on organic avocado in Andalusia also highlight a positive social impact, with job creation and better profitability for small and medium-sized farms.

The fresh choice. A fresh avocado, picked at maturity, offers creamy flesh and authentic flavour. Conversely, avocados that have travelled for weeks in cold storage lose their texture and taste. At The Green Souk, our avocados come from local producers and are delivered quickly after harvest, without prolonged cold storage.

How to Choose and Store Them

A ripe avocado yields slightly under gentle thumb pressure, near the stem. If it is hard, leave it to ripen at room temperature for a few days. Once ripe, it keeps in the refrigerator for two to three days. To prevent oxidation of cut flesh, a drizzle of lemon juice and cling film in contact with the surface will slow browning.

Recipe Ideas

Avocado toast with lemon and olive oil. Mash the flesh of half an avocado with a fork. Add a drizzle of lemon juice, a pinch of salt, a twist of pepper, and a drizzle of our extra virgin olive oil. Spread on a slice of toasted wholemeal bread. Simple, quick, delicious.

Homemade guacamole. Blend or mash two ripe avocados with the juice of one lime, half a finely chopped red onion, one diced tomato, a handful of fresh coriander, salt, and chilli to taste. Serve with raw vegetables or corn chips.

Avocado, tomato, and fresh goat's cheese salad. Cut an avocado into cubes, add halved cherry tomatoes, cubes of fresh goat's cheese, a few rocket leaves, and dress with a vinaigrette of olive oil and lemon. A light and complete meal.

Avocado and banana smoothie. Blend half an avocado with a banana, a handful of spinach, plant-based milk (almond or oat), and a spoonful of honey. A nourishing and energising breakfast.

Baked avocado. Cut an avocado in half, remove the stone, brush the flesh with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and optionally add an egg in the hollow. Bake at 200°C for 10 to 15 minutes. A simple and comforting dish.
